The West Australian Modern Greek Language Teachers’ Association Inc. (WAMGLTA) is proud to announce that this year’s WAMGLTA nominee for the Professional Teaching Council of Western Australia (PTCWA) Outstanding Professional Service Award was Deputy Chairperson of WAMGLTA, Ms Maria Svarnou.
Maria received the Award at the PTCWA Presentation Event, which took place on Wednesday 23 October at the Lake Karrinyup Country Club. Representing WAMGLTA were the following members: Chairperson of WAMGLTA, Dr Angela Evangelinou-Yiannakis, and Executive Committee Members, Mrs Katerina Reklitis and Ms Maria Gerou. Also present was Mr Michael Reklitis. Maria, as the Award recipient, was also there in her capacity as Vice President of the PTCWA Executive Committee. Maria’s citation for the PTCWA Outstanding Professional Service Award is included below: Maria is a passionate advocate of Modern Greek language education, and she has actively contributed to WAGMLTA’s mission by playing a key role in various initiatives dedicated to preserving and promoting the Modern Greek language and culture within our community. Maria has held key roles on the Committee, including Secretary and Deputy Chairperson where she has played an instrumental role in helping to coordinate professional events and assist in the management of the Association to promote Modern Greek language and cultural initiatives. Co-invigilator for the Centre for the Greek Language (CGL) examinations for the past two years, Maria has assisted in the smooth execution of the examinations and has co-assessed the oral component. Maria has attended and participated in the annual Consular Wreath-laying Services in commemoration of Hellenic cultural and key historical events. She has been a keynote speaker for community and school events, such as the Pan Macedonian Association of WA for the annual celebration of the Dimitria Festival. Maria will be undertaking the role of Webmaster for WAMGLTA’s webpage for 2025. WAMGLTA extends heartfelt congratulations to Ms Svarnou for her award from the PTCWA! The West Australian Modern Greek Language Teachers’ Association Inc. (WAMGLTA) is proud to announce that Mrs Katerina Reklitis was this year’s recipient of the Professional Teaching Council of Western Australia (PTCWA) Outstanding Professional Service Award.
Katerina was honoured with the Award at the 2023 Presentation Ceremony, which took place on Wednesday 25 October at the Lake Karrinyup Country Club. Representing WAMGLTA were the following members: Chair, Dr Angela Evangelinou-Yiannakis; Deputy Chair, Ms Maria Svarnou, who was also there in her capacity as a member of the PTCWA Executive Committee; and member, Mr George Anastassiadis. Our nominee for 2023 and member of the Executive Committee of WAMGLTA, Mrs Katerina Reklitis was accompanied by her husband, Mr Michael Reklitis. Also in attendance was the Principal of St. Andrew’s Grammar, Mr Craig Monaghan and his wife, Mrs Katia Monaghan, both proudly supporting Mrs Reklitis as a long-standing staff member of the school. The Honourable Consul of Greece, Mrs Georgia Karasiotou, was among the special invited guests. St Andrew’s Grammar was established as the CGL Examination Centre in late 2004, with the first examinations being offered in 2005 and annually thereafter to the present day. As the foundation Director of the CGL at St Andrew’s Grammar, I am proud to announce this year’s successful candidates. We enjoyed an overall success rate of 89%. Congratulations are extended to all the candidates, their families, schools, and their Modern Greek language teachers. On 11 September of this year, I had the good fortune to be in Greece and, as I have done in all previous trips to Greece, I visited the Centre for the Greek Language in Thessaloniki, where I met with Mr Panagiotis Dagkopoulos from the Division for the Support and Promotion of the Greek Language. After an important professional discussion but also an enjoyable convivial chat, Mr Dagkopoulos presented me with the Certificate of Attainment in Greek for each of our successful candidates. These will be presented to the candidates soon at a formal event at their respective schools or via post. I extend personal thanks to my fellow co-invigilators of this year’s examinations, Mrs Katerina Reklitis and Ms Maria Svarnou, both of whom assisted me in the smooth execution of the examinations over the four days in May. Gratitude is also extended to the Principal, Mr Craig Monaghan, and the staff of St Andrew’s Grammar for accommodating the CGL examinations, including the room changes necessary for regular classes. All interested persons are now invited to register for this year’s Centre for the Greek Language (CGL) examinations to be held in May at St. Andrew’s Grammar (officially recognised CGL Examination Centre).
Prospective candidates of Greek and non-Greek background are invited to test their written and spoken Greek language competency skills through these annual examinations. Successful candidates will be issued with a Certificate of Attainment in Greek from Greece’s Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, and the Centre for the Greek Language: Division for the Support and Promotion of the Greek Language (Thessaloniki, Greece). There are 7 levels on offer, catering to a full spectrum of Greek language competencies. These include a level for children aged 8-12 years old (children who are over 8 years of age and below 12 years of age on the 31st of May 2023); a level for beginner adolescents and adults, through to a level for persons with excellent knowledge of the Greek language. Candidates younger than 16 are strongly advised to avoid taking the examinations for levels B2, C1 and C2 as the examination content for these levels may require general knowledge and experience beyond their years. The remainder of the candidates were from the Greek Language and Culture Institute (GLCI) of Evangelismos, and their certificates were presented by me at the GLCI End-of-Year Celebration on Saturday 10 December, and in the presence of the Honourable Consul of Greece, Mrs Georgia Karasiotou, and the Principal of the GLCI, Dr Pol Koutsakis. On behalf of the CGL Committee, I extend my congratulations once more to the successful candidates, their teachers, schools, and their families! I take this opportunity to thank Ms Maria Svarnou who invigilated the examinations with me, and who co-marked the oral component.
