The West Australian Modern Greek Language Teachers’ Association Inc. (WAMGLTA) is proud to announce this year’s participants and prize winners in its annual Speak Greek in June Competition.

Offered for the third consecutive year, the competition invites students from Pre-primary to Year 12, who are studying the Modern Greek language in a formal capacity, to speak for up to 3 minutes on any of the listed topics on offer or on a topic of their choice, as approved by their teacher.  This year, the topic was “The 200th Anniversary of The Greek War of Independence”.  Students could choose from the following ideas related to the topic:

  • Other ideas relating to the topic

The aim of the competition is to promote the speaking of Modern Greek, which is often the most challenging part of learning a language.

The entries are video-recorded and are submitted for judging, based on three criteria:
  1. Fluency in speaking Greek;
  2. Clear communication of meaning; and
  3. Audience engagement.
The judges’ decision is final and video-recordings are returned to the participating schools after the competition has ended.

Congratulations are extended to all the students who participated in this year’s competition; to their Greek language teachers, their schools, and their families!  WAMGLTA encourages all students studying the Greek language to participate in the annual WAMGLTA Speak Greek in June Competition, which has been initiated to support the work that teachers do in the classroom.

Postponement of the 2021 CGL Examinations

19/4/2021

To all prospective CGL Examination Candidates
Please note that the Centre for the Greek Language in Thessaloniki, Greece, has informed all centres around the world of the postponement of the May examinations due to the continuing effects of COVID-19.
The ongoing critical situation regarding the pandemic in Greece, and in many countries around the world, has necessitated a review of the dates for this year’s CGL Examinations.  To this end, the new examination period will be in the first week of October 2021 (4-8 October).  Furthermore, and as was the case in 2020, the examinations will take place over four days and not three to allow for social distancing measures, as needed.
As a result of this change in dates, there will also be a new registration period; that is, from 1 to 28 June 2021.  The exact date and time for each CGL Examination Level will be announced in due course.

Picture‘Outstanding PTCWA Member Professional Association’ Award for WAMGLTA
The West Australian Modern Greek Language Teachers’ Association Inc. (WAMGLTA) has recently received recognition from two peak associations; the Professional Teaching Council of Western Australia Inc.(PTCWA) and the Modern Language Teachers’ Association of Western Australia(MLTAWA).

On Wednesday 18 November, WAMGLTA was invited to attend the 2020 PTCWA Showcase Celebration Event at the State Library Theatre in Northbridge.  The event was attended by numerous associations, including WAMGLTA, which was represented by its Chairperson, Dr Angela Evangelinou-Yiannakis; Secretary, Ms Maria Svarnou; and Executive Committee Member, Ms Nina Battalis.

During the course of the evening, WAMGLTA was introduced to the other associations via a brief PowerPoint Presentation and outline of its main objectives.  WAMGLTA was then acknowledged with a certificate for being an “Outstanding PTCWA Member Professional Association”.

‘Outstanding PTCWA Member Professional Association’ Award for WAMGLTA
On Saturday 28 November, WAMGLTA, as a new member of the Modern Language Teachers’ Association of Western Australian, was invited to attend the MLTAWA Annual General Meeting (AGM), followed by the 90thBirthday Celebratory Event, both held at the Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle.  The MLTAWA is the oldest Language Association and the oldest Learning Area Association in Australia!  Its first meeting was held at the UWA premises in Irwin Street, Perth, in 1930, and it has continued to be the peak body advocating for languages since.

The AGM was attended by all the Language Associations, including WAMGLTA, which was represented by its Chairperson, Dr Angela Evangelinou-Yiannakis; and later by its Secretary, Ms Maria Svarnou.

WAMGLTA was welcomed officially to the MLTAWA at the AGM, being one of two new members of the umbrella association.

Later, in the follow-up celebration for the 90thBirthday of MLTAWA, WAMGLTA was warmly welcomed once again, this time in the presence of many dignitaries and guests, including WA Minister for Education and Training, the Honourable Sue Ellery MLC; and the Honourable Consul of Greece, Mrs Georgia Karasiotou.

Picture
WAMGLTA becomes a member of the MLTAWA, the peak association advocating for languages.
A highlight of the 90thBirthday celebrations was the singing of the ‘Happy Birthday’ song in all the member languages, including Modern Greek where ten Year 8 students of St. Andrew’s Grammar wished MLTAWA ‘Happy Birthday!’ in Greek with the words: “ΧΡΟΝΙΑΠΟΛΛΑ, MLTAWA! ΝΑΤΑΕΚΑΤΟΣΤΗΣΕΙΣ!”  Thanks are extended to Mrs Katerina Reklitis for preparing the students, whose voices were recorded specifically for this event.
As a relatively new association, WAMGLTA has made its mark, establishing itself as a worthy member of two peak associations in WA.
