2023 marks the 19th year that the Centre for the Greek Language (CGL) examinations have been offered to students and adults in the Greek and wider community of Western Australia. St Andrew’s Grammar was established as the CGL Examination Centre in late 2004, with the first examinations being offered in 2005 and annually thereafter to the present day. As the foundation Director of the CGL at St Andrew’s Grammar, I am proud to announce this year’s successful candidates. We enjoyed an overall success rate of 89%. Congratulations are extended to all the candidates, their families, schools, and their Modern Greek language teachers. On 11 September of this year, I had the good fortune to be in Greece and, as I have done in all previous trips to Greece, I visited the Centre for the Greek Language in Thessaloniki, where I met with Mr Panagiotis Dagkopoulos from the Division for the Support and Promotion of the Greek Language. After an important professional discussion but also an enjoyable convivial chat, Mr Dagkopoulos presented me with the Certificate of Attainment in Greek for each of our successful candidates. These will be presented to the candidates soon at a formal event at their respective schools or via post. I extend personal thanks to my fellow co-invigilators of this year’s examinations, Mrs Katerina Reklitis and Ms Maria Svarnou, both of whom assisted me in the smooth execution of the examinations over the four days in May. Gratitude is also extended to the Principal, Mr Craig Monaghan, and the staff of St Andrew’s Grammar for accommodating the CGL examinations, including the room changes necessary for regular classes. Next year’s CGL examinations are scheduled to take place on the following days: Level A1 (8-12 years of age) Tuesday 14 May 2024 Level A1 (adolescents & adults) Tuesday 14 May 2024 Level A2 Tuesday 14 May 2024 Level B2 Wednesday 15 May 2024 Level C1 Wednesday 15 May 2024 Level B1 Thursday 16 May 2024 Level C2 Thursday 16 May 2024 Registrations will open on 1 February 2024 and will close on 20 March 2024. All interested persons are now invited to register for this year’s Centre for the Greek Language (CGL) examinations to be held in May at St. Andrew’s Grammar (officially recognised CGL Examination Centre).
Prospective candidates of Greek and non-Greek background are invited to test their written and spoken Greek language competency skills through these annual examinations. Successful candidates will be issued with a Certificate of Attainment in Greek from Greece’s Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, and the Centre for the Greek Language: Division for the Support and Promotion of the Greek Language (Thessaloniki, Greece). There are 7 levels on offer, catering to a full spectrum of Greek language competencies. These include a level for children aged 8-12 years old (children who are over 8 years of age and below 12 years of age on the 31st of May 2023); a level for beginner adolescents and adults, through to a level for persons with excellent knowledge of the Greek language. Candidates younger than 16 are strongly advised to avoid taking the examinations for levels B2, C1 and C2 as the examination content for these levels may require general knowledge and experience beyond their years. The full complement of levels on offer is as follows:

Dr Angela Evangelinou-Yiannakis Director of the CGL Examinations at St. Andrew’s Grammar (61002) 30 December 2022 The West Australian Modern Greek Language Teachers’ Association Inc. (WAMGLTA) held its annual Speak Greek in June Event this year but with a difference! It was no longer a competition. Rather, the “Event” offered an opportunity for students to speak Greek freely and without the competitive edge that existed in the past, allowing them to relax and hold natural dialogue or respond to questions in a natural way, whilst being video recorded. The students could speak on any topic agreed upon in consultation with their teacher. Suggested topics included: • Holding an everyday conversation with a peer and/or with a teacher/other adult • Role play • Reporting of an event • Interviewing a famous person • Reciting an original poem/singing an original song • Presenting a talk on a topic • Speaking online via Zoom or Teams, or other mode, with other students in a school in WA, the Eastern States, or even in Greece • Any other approach that works well with the teaching/learning program being undertaken in the Greek Language provider where Greek is being taught WAMGLTA is proud to announce that there were 26 students who participated in the Speak Greek in June Event from three educational providers where Modern Greek is taught, listed alphabetically below: • Centre for Hellenic Studies, WA (CHSWA) – 2 students • Greek Language and Culture Institute (GLCI) of Evangelismos – 19 students • Immaculate Heart College (IHC) – 5 students The topics were varied and all the students spoke with ease in front of the camera and in the presence of their teacher and/or peers. It was also encouraging to see the range of ages in the students who participated, from primary school children through to students undertaking ATAR level Modern Greek at the CHSWA. Students were awarded a Certificate of Participation encased in a document wallet, along with a small prize of a USB for saving their work, and a confectionary. Special thanks are extended to Dr Con Berbatis and family for sponsoring this annual Greek-speaking event for the students of our local Greek language providers! WAMGLTA congratulates all the students, their teachers, and their families for their wonderful work in this year’s WAMGLTA Speak Greek in June Event and we look forward to their ongoing participation next year and beyond.
